World Oral Health Day is March 20, 2022, and the message of the campaign is: Be Proud of Your Mouth. This year’s focus is on the importance of oral health for your happiness and well-being. Good oral health has a positive impact on your general health, well-being and quality of life. This month on the blog we hear from Dr. Hamilton and a few of the patients at Blairmore Dental Centre about why caring for their oral health is important for them.
What makes oral health important?
“The mouth is a small part of your body, but it’s an important part. We know there is a link between oral health and other diseases and as a dentist one of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping patients improve their oral health. This is important not just for the health of their mouth but their overall well-being. Seeing someone walk out of our clinic with improved health, a new smile and new confidence is great”

“I know that taking care of my teeth is important because I don’t want to have any bigger issues down later. The small steps that I take everyday will save me time and pain down the road.” ~Alecia G, patient~
“I know that oral health is so incredibly important to our overall health. It’s a great indicator of what’s going on in other places in our body. Because of that we have always stressed the importance of oral health with our five- and three-year-old. Of course, at that age, they don’t always want to brush their teeth. We make a game of it with an egg timer, or special toothbrushes that light up. Getting fun-looking toothpaste, mouthwash and floss helps too! We also started taking them to see the dentist early on, so that there was no fear. They absolutely love it now! Clean teeth, clean breath, and a toy, where could you go wrong?!” ~Megan M, patient~
“Even though it’s sometimes very difficult to wrangle my little ones to brush their teeth and some nights it would just be easier to skip it all together, I know that helping my kids establish good habits while they are young is important. I want them to understand the importance of taking care of their teeth!” ~Jessica H, patient~
“We know that oral health is important for our everyday health and well-being. A healthy mouth = happiness. Strong oral health helps someone feel good about their overall well being. Healthy gums and a healthy smile give me the confidence to take on whatever challenges the day may throw at me.” ~Ashley and Dave G, patients~
“Oral health is so important and it’s something that requires consistency. I know that prioritizing my oral health is vital for preventing oral diseases. I’ve found that finding a great dentist and going for regular checkups has helped me maintain my overall health (especially as someone with an auto-immune disease)!” ~Andrew M, patient~
“I talk to my students often about the importance of oral health. In my own life I know that small, good habits are important, and I want my students to know that too.” ~Breanne C, patient~
“Good hygiene when younger leads to less problems later in life! Oral hygiene is so important for personal appearance and self-confidence.” ~Sherrie F, patient~
